Jamie Carragher slams selection of Alberto Moreno for Liverpool’s Premier League opener against Watford
Jamie Carragher was not happy to see Alberto Moreno lining up for his former side Liverpool on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.
The Liverpool hero turned Sky Sports pundit has not been shy about criticising the Spanish left-back in the past, regularly sharinghis doubts over Moreno’s defensive abilities.
Back in September of last year, Carragher was already claiming Moreno’s time was up at Liverpool.
Back then, he said: “He (Klopp) obviously rates him (Milner) higher than Moreno. If you’re a left back and the manager is playing a right midfielder ahead of you it probably tells you your time is up at the club.”
So perhaps it should come as no surprise that Carragher was unhappy about Jurgen Klopp picking the Spaniard for Liverpool’s first game of the 2017/18 season.
Speaking on Sky Sports ahead of the Reds’ Premier League clash at Watford, the Champions League-winning defender was unimpressed by the idea that a good pre-season had been enough to get Moreno back into the starting XI.
“Did I think there was any hope of seeing Moreno in a Liverpool shirt again at the end of the season? Not a chance.”
“I must say I don’t like the fact that Klopp is judging him on pre-season, a couple of good games, it’s not the place.”
“I don’t like the fact he’s giving him the chance on the back of pre-season, he knows the players, he’s had him for 18 months.”
“He’s done well pre-season. The more we get used to Klopp he’s not someone always going to look at the cheque book.”
